In a typical season, our most-viewed shows list is fairly steady, but fall 2022 was no typical season. Early on in Milan, almost two years to the day after Covid broke out in Italy, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine disrupted any sense of post-pandemic return to normalcy the industry was hoping for. The rest of the season was an open question, whether or not designers chose to confront it: What is fashion’s place in a moment of incipient war? After a very strange few years, a relatively normal schedule of fashion shows wrapped in March. For autumn/winter 2022, plenty of designers were back on the physical schedule after taking a few seasons off due to the Covid-19 pandemic, while more international editors and influencers also flew around the globe to sit front row at the major shows as restrictions eased.
If you decide to go with a crown, choose one that’s delicate and won’t overwhelm your hair. In fact, some of the most raved-about spring 2022 shows (when I looked in real time on the handles of fashion insiders—particularly buyers) skewed towards this more minimalistic and understated approach. Peter Do’s debut runway during New York Fashion Week was one that many an expert got behind and really set the tone for a new wave of get-up-and-go outfits. “Versatility and ease are more important than ever, and this can be achieved with basics with a twist, modern classics and muted tones, all of which are the vital pieces every wardrobe needs to help elevate the simplest of looks,” says Page. “We’re seeing our customers invest more in quality basics and timeless pieces that can be worn for seasons and even years to come, so when those pieces have an additional quirky element—they’re sold! Perhaps a trend best-suited to those looking to have fun with fashion again after spending the best part of two years wearing tracksuits, super sheer fabrics will be having a real moment in the sun come spring. Of course, they can be cleverly layered to protect modesty, rendering this trend one of the most flexible for SS22. Strapped accents have been gaining popularity over recent seasons, but it’s set to really take hold from summer 2022 onwards. Whether it’s a top with multi-straps across the shoulders and décolletage, trousers with a strapped waistband criss-crossing across the stomach – or, indeed, both – you’ll have to forgo any worries of awkward tan lines next season and embrace the straps. When it came to thinking outside the box for a catwalk show, Balenciaga certainly was ahead of the rest this season. The house surprised guests with a special 10-minute episode of The Simpsons which saw Marge, Homer and the rest travel to Paris Fashion Week to walk in the Balenciaga show. The spectacle saw Balenciaga and Demna Gvasalia poke fun at itself and the fashion industry as a whole – and was an undisputed success on social media. According to the brand’s show notes, the SS22 collection expresses all of Christopher Kane’s nuances: conservative yet playful, subversive but sensual, hard against soft, sinister versus innocent; and always a balance between masculine and feminine. The slogans (which appeared across the collection) meanwhile, were inspired by a documentary on La Vey, where Kane observed that the words ‘live’ and ‘evil’ are the same backwards. This felt like an appropriate analogy for the world today, he said. I loved working with a more minimalist approach for spring/summer 2022, Kane added. I felt the need for clean structures and volume. It felt right for now. My intention is always to make women to feel confident, safe and sensual when they wear Christopher Kane.
Blunt Bob, Bobs are nothing new, but if it seems like celebs are going shorter this year, it’s because they are. Hairstylist Ashley Streicher, who just joined R+Co’s Collective, says her clients are asking for “shorter and bolder” cuts. She recently chopped Mandy Moore’s hair into a messy, blunt bob that’s super trendy this season. “I find that people are liking a heavier, more blunt look this spring,” she explains. “I love a really blunt, perfect cut, that when not styled at all, still makes a statement.
